Botox

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medication that was FDA approved for treatment of overactive bladder in 2013. The medication can be used to treat symptoms of frequency and urgency with or without incontinence. When injected into the bladder it causes the bladder muscle to relax and relieve symptoms of overactive bladder. The medication is injected directly into the bladder muscle with the use of cystoscopy. The procedure is performed in minutes in the office with local anesthesia. Patients experience little discomfort but may have blood in the urine following the procedure. The effects of this treatment can be seen in 3 weeks and can last 3-10 months. Patients will return for repeat injection at the time their symptoms reappear.
